  • Ft. Atkinson SHP is located 16 miles north of Omaha, NE in the town of Fort Calhoun. It is a reconstruction on the site of the westernmost US Army post built on the Council Bluff above the Missouri River by the Missouri Expedition commanded by Col. Henry Atkinson of the 6th Infantry. The fort was active between 1820 and 1827 supporting the Fur Trade and facilitating government relations with the Indian population in the West. Now home to Friends of Fort Atkinson a living history volunteer association of interpreters portraying life at the frontier fort.
